I was listening to NPR talk radio last week with a military historian on the subject of atrocities, and a veteran of WWII called in to talk about something that happened in France (I think it was the Malmedy massacre, Battle of the Bulge).

The Germans massacred a group of Americans who surrendered. He said afterwards Americans didn't take prisoners. Or rather, they took prisoners but the prisoners never made it back.

It's true that these things happen in war. It's also true that they spawn a cycle of revenge.
