This... "it is now crumbling because we didnt finish the job" My sense is that, although we didn't realize, we set Af. up for failure when they pulled those guys chasing OBL at Tora Bora out to send them to Iraq. Are non-nuclear wars winnable by major powers any more? Or, more to the point, wars of occupation. Defending is fairly easy, eg Gulf War 1; but we didn't try and occupy a country. We have the power to beat the snot out of almost everybody, but then what?
