Saddam was an idiot, a blowhard and a murderous maniac. And yet, he did understand his own country better than the Bush adminstration did. He realized that to hold down the Shiites majority and Islamic extremists, it took an iron hand. Which means violent supression of dissidents. Because without it, you have civil war.

In the 80's, Reaganites supported and armed Saddam against Islamic fundamentalist Iran. At the same time, they secretly armed Iran (which was illegal). And they looked the other way when Saddam gassed the Kurds and cracked down on Shiite dissisents, burying them in mass graves.

One more thing, Saddam's fear of Islamic extremists made it almost impossible for him to ever ally himself with Al Qaida. When the rightwing used that excuse to invade, they were really fabricating BS. We have still not found any credible evidence linking Saddam to Al Qaida.
