Exxon is already putting $1 tax on gas, it's called gouging.

Exxon-Mobil doesn't make over $1 net profit per gallon of
gasoline sold, so it would be pretty hard for them to "gouge" a dollar of "excess profit".

XOM's profit margin is lower than many other companies, and the gas/oil/energy industry as a whole also has lower profit margins than many other industries. Well at least the publicly traded companies in the industry have lower profit margins. Some of the giant national oil companies in OPEC countries or Russia might have large profit margins, and they have the biggest oil reserves.
