Recruiting standards have not significantly changed.

The cases of abuse at Abu Graib are apparently not how the typical person detained by Americans in Iraq is/was treated.

In the book "Generation Kill", the writer describes gunners in his platoon mowing down Iraqis watching them and waving along the roadside for no reason other than they didn't know who was friendly or not, so WTF just kill them all. That was during the invasion.

If something like that did happen and was observed by the writer it would not be the norm, but rather an aberration, a "weird isolated case", and a crime.
