The key fact in the special election for the seat once
Irish Pennants
By jkelly

held by corrupt former Rep. Randy Duke Cunningham is that the Democrat, Francine Busby -- despite the scandal and a contested Democratic gubernatorial primary to bring out Democrats -- got no larger a proportion of the popular vote than Democrats customarily have in that district.

The election is being described as "close," which it sort of was, due to the presence a right-wing candidate running as an independent, but in incomplete returns, Busby had just a hair over 45 per cent of the vote. Not so good considering all the resources the national Democratic party shoveled into the race.

Busby probably lost because of her immigration gaffe, which likely brought to the polls some conservatives not enamored by the performance of the Republican majority in Congress. It just goes to show that Republicans can win when the alternative is considered.

The one thing of which we can be certain is the news media will no longer refer to this race as a "bellwether."
