I just saw a History Channel show on Saddam's doctor. When I started watching he was telling about how Saddam's wife refused to cry out when he started cutting on her before the anesthetic took hold.

He said,"Can you feel what I'm doing?"

"Of course," she said, "you're cutting through my skin." Then the doctor explained that she could not complain in Saddam's presence because his response would be violent and dangerous. The doctor waited for the anesthetic to take hold before cutting further.

It's amazing that this doctor survived to tell the story, because he really hated Saddam despite being an insider.
