Dear Eracer:

The MySQL test were flawed by Anandtech's own admission. Then they just went and showed the numbers anyway. Those MySQL tests showed that four core was slower than two core. And yet he didn't want to throw out the two core tests as well. It could be that one core was even faster than two core. By using the those tests, it becomes apparent that they needed these flawed benchmarks to allow Woodcrest to succeed.

Usually they trot out the "Forums DB serving" for server tests. Why didn't they use it here? Didn't Woodcrest perform well enough? I also notice that they stopped using the HP 585DL server for some tests as it won all of the tests it was used in. And you can configure it with 4 Opteron 856s (4x3GHz cores) to test against 2 Xeon 5160s (4x3GHz Woodcrest cores). Yes the 585DL would need 8x1GB PC3200 ECC registered CAS3 modules but, they would cost less and use less power than the 4x1GB FB-DIMM PC2-4200s.

Pete
