On reflection, I imagine she wore it from habit.

Maybe it was for the same reason that orthodox Jewish women cover their hair or shave their head and wear wigs, Amish women cover their heads or their hair, and nuns who dress in civvies still wear those little veil hats that mostly cover their hair.

A sign of modesty and religious observance.

Similarly, orthodox Jewish men wear hats, and even non-orthodox Jewish men wear kippa.
