That issue has long bothered me as well, but I'm finally to the point that I accept culture and heritage as important human social constraints, and ethnicity and religion are part of that. It's entirely possible to have distinct culture and heritage without having it mandated in law. There are plenty of unique cultures living happily together (sometimes) in the USA, including satisfied Jewish people, some of them extremely othrodox. The problems arise when the state legislates based on ethnicity, because the ones who are not in the ethnic group become institutionally discriminated against.
