That's a good question. As I recall from my time over there, Ansar Al-Sunnah is primarily Iraqi, with few foreigners involved. Their leadership is also heavily flushed with IIS members. We lumped AAS in with AQIZ (Al Qai'da in Iraq) because it was a convenient means of categorizing the various factions. Recall that Al Qai'da itself is like an "investment and strategic guidance" organization to which various terrorist groups pledge "Bayat" (loyalty oaths). But the names of all of these various terrorist cells are more than I can count. Hell.. basically someone pledged Bayat to the Islamist cause, and was thus empowered to attract adherents to his terrorist cell.

The MSC seems to be an attempt to reorganize the Islamo-Fascist front in Iraq, emphasizing Iraqi participation. It's an attempt to diminish it's association with Zarqawi, given that he's really lost much of his public support due to this Takfirist proclivities and the fact that he's a foreigner.

It will make it more difficult from a propaganda standpoint, since the MSC is more "home-grown":

But since I still believe the indigenous Iraqi Islamist factions are essentially fronts of the FRE Ba'athist leadership, this move consolidates the insurgency under their control, and thus, eliminates the stigma of being a foreign-led movement.

That's my initial take. The MSC was still in its formative stages while I was there. We knew of it (mainly due to the Douglas Wood kidnapping), but we were not sure of its true role.
