"The White House has been frustrated that many Americans have given President George W. Bush lukewarm reviews for his handling of the economy, despite robust growth and low unemployment."

the problem is that their doctored statistics do not depict reality, but some sort of make believe world. when things are actually going halfway well, it is possible to fool most people with his stuff - but not when the gap between the data and reality becomes too obvious.

the problem is, one can't possibly 'let the air out slowly' - the moment the bubble stops expanding, it is doomed to collapse. that chart of housing inventories says it all - the bubble is dead, and in all likelihood beyond rescue at this point.
this situation will turn into the Fed's worst nightmare, as financial intermediation could suffer mightily in view of the banks enormous exposure to the sector.
