united nations is a joke. they do some good helping out in emergency relief otherwise forgot it

The root of the problem is a strange dichotomy between purely economic interests, and political interests.

Global treaties and regulatory/arbitral bodies concerning commercial, financial, and economic affairs are a great success, overall. For the most part, the nations of the world are able to see past short-term self-interest to join in concerted efforts to maximize everyone's long-term self-interest.

But then that always goes to pot when we start dealing with political issues. Naked short-term self-interests win everytime, it seems. So we have the odd situation of having successful rational voluntary regulation of economic affairs on a global scale, but it is "state of nature" for political affairs.
