It was the Rush Limbaugh movement which started putting out and building fabricated views of reality, which rightwingers seized uopn thirstily like converts to a religious cult. Some of the big lies that became "truth" to them were --

-Cutting taxes increases revenues
-Hiking taxes is wrong
-Republicans are good for the economy
-Pollution creates jobs and a clean America costs jobs
-Environmentalists are nutty
-Democrats are weak on defense, not real men
-Liberals are elitists
-Liberals are not Christian or religious
-Government is inefficient but corporations are not
-Corporations can be trusted if we deregulate them
-Clinton's sex life made him evil, regardless of how wonderfully he ran the country
-Reagan ended the Cold War by massive spending on arms
-All defense spending is good for the country
-The media is liberal and don't tell the real story
-Republicans spend less (only on the poor, but more on the rich)

While there may be some truth to some of the above, they are basically broad-based lies. So when the Limbaughs of the world got people believing these fabrications, they just built and built more lies on top of that foundation, a big dishonest house of cards. Now, no matter what hard proof you show them, rightwingers just will not see the light, that most of the above is just not true, and proven so.
