Intel Chip Prices Expected to be Slashed

AMD will follow suit no doubt, but with a twist.
AMD is releasing reference designs for quad-processor desktops. These feature two dual-chip processors connected by an external version of the hypertransport (the same link that goes to the southbridge). The real twist is that this will be a reference design for software. AMD will have a quad-processor-on-a-chip by the time Windows Vista is ready and wants the games and models and Vista to be software ready for it. In the mean time, Intel still has to go off-chip to the memory controller just to get it's dual processor chips to talk to each half of the same chip.

It's been awhile since there was a compelling software reason to get new hardware. I believe that reason will come with real-time simulations that result in realistic 3D video. This will need a multiprocessor approach. The real question is whether there will be widespread demand for the application.
