The RAF has tested two new systems developed by BAE Systems and Selex SI, which could free up a significant number of potential locations for wind farms around the world.

BAE Systems Advanced Digital Tracker (ADT) and the Sensis SPE-3000 processor are designed to overcome the interference problems caused by wind turbines and to enable civil and military air traffic control radar to function properly.

The site for the tests, Clatter mountain near Newtown in Powy, was located near four working wind farms which collectively provided a rigorous test environment. A selection of different RAF aircraft flew over the wind farms and their flights were tracked by an MoD mobile Watchman radar using the new technologies. The tests will determine if the aircraft could be distinguished among the radar clutter caused by the wind turbines' rotating blades. BAE is expected to present the results of the trials at the Airport Operators Association Safety Conference in Leeds on 27 June.

Minister for energy Malcolm Wicks said: "This interference is a problem that has to be overcome all over the world and the pioneering work being done in Wales puts the UK at the forefront of the technology, with the inherent business benefits that can bring. It is encouraging to see government, industry and the military working closely together to find a solution."
