It's like a machine shop. You have various lathes and mills and maybe grinders and a wire EDM's. If you have 10 4-axis mills that all have the same table, they can all be used to make the same parts. The parts get scheduled to use a type of resource in MRP, but any of the machines may end up working on the work order.

I don't know if this helps anyone. I work for an aerospace systems manufacturer and we have a machine shop, so I certainly understand the concept.
