Alzheimer's could have high-tech fix

LOS ANGELES -- A neuroscientist has developed the first artificial brain part, a hippocampus that helps people with Alzheimer’s disease.

It allows patients to form new memories.

"There's no reason why we can't think in terms of artificial brain parts in the same way we can think in terms of artificial eyes and artificial ears,” said Theodore Berger, who does research at the University of Southern California.

With Berger’s technology, the brain would have some help in processing information. A computer chip reroutes the information, bypassing the damaged area of the hippocampus.
