I think you mean I don't "stay in enough following chatlines".

Media to me is newspapers and television news. Both of which may have their biases, but usually don't exalt in their biases.

Then you have pseudo media like "commentators" and "FOX news" and "blogs" which approach every story with a particular point of view.

So I wouldn't ever use the term "main stream media". There's MEDIA and PSEUDO MEDIA.
