Redrawing the Middle Eastern Map

Last night watched Deepa Mehta's "Earth," about the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, from a book written by an eyewitness.

The bloodshed from ethnic violence was unbelievably horrendous.

In the end, after violence, bloodshed and murder, 7 million Muslims moved from India to Pakistan, and 5 million Hindus and Sikhs moved from Pakistan to India.

Partitioning countries on the basis of ethnicity seems to cause many new problems, not just solve them. The majority wants to expel the minority, and will kill them if they won't leave, even if their families have lived there for centuries.

(Good movie, BTW. I watched once on Sundance channel and couldn't understand what was going on because no subtitles, and half is in English and half other languages, even in the same sentence. Last night subtitles on DVD and I finally understood.)
