California has shot at winning bid for supercomputer

Calif. has a good shot at winning a bid for a huge supercomputer financed by the National Science Foundation. The top contenders in the state are UC San Diego, the Lawrence Livermore Natl. Laboratory, the Lawrence Berkeley Natl. Laboratory and NASA's Ames Research Center. The state's competitors will be centers in Tenn., Pa., Ill. and Texas.

The $200-million device will boost computing power fourfold to 1000 trillion calculations per second when it's finished in 2010.
