Components of mind are dependent upon brain functions. This is now well known. Unconsciousness or brain death destroys awareness and cognition and memory and...everything that we associate with mind. Demons, spirits, soul--all these are imaginary concepts arising in superstitious ages. They are no more topics of legitimate enquiry than are unicorns. But the human intellect seeks always for some explanation of the explanations. Thus, we surf the unknown and we imagine ever new magic--not unlike the demons and spirits that lived in trees and bodies and caused things to move... It is great to explore the unknown and chart new knowledge. It is when we treat imagined causes as factual and imbue them with BELIEF that such people as Moral Absolutists are given power to strut across the planet doing what to them seems "good". Islamic terrorists are an example of this...
