I read the bible a lot because when I'm traveling I usually forget to bring a book with me and there is always Gideon. I think most of the new testament is an invention, you know the walking on water stuff etc. the exorcisms, the raising of the dead, casting out demons into herds of swine. They needed this invention to back up other claims. There is some good stuff about forgiveness and unconditional love but there is certainly nothing about setting up little pompous asses as gatekeepers and holders of the sacred secrets.

The fact is the Roman Empire was in decline and they needed to morph into something else to hold some semblance of power and the Holy Roman Catholic Church was invented along with the concept of original sin. They held up a moral code that for the most part unless you were a complete freak could never be emulated which installed a further since of guilt into the general populace. This old guilt game has worked for centuries and shows no signs of letting up.

If there is a God these cads will have a special pot of boiling oil waiting for them at the end of their days.

Everything good in philosophy or theology is just a footnote to Socrates.
