Jeng--

Actually, quite a lot of trading takes place on Instinet everyday, though almost all of the trades are between professional traders. Well over 50% of my stock trades every day take place on Instinet. The Nasdaq dealers, as you may have read, simply cannot be relied upon to honor their displayed quotes in many cases, though this is not as bad in the more liquid stocks like Sun. As you indicated, when news is out, before- or after-hours Instinet trades often offer an indication of where a stock will open in the next session. HP, for instance, was down as much as $2 from the close when I left the office today, and Sun traded as low as 54 1/2.
