Killing Americans is part of their larger goal. If American power backs or protect their enemies they want to get the Americans out. They hope to do so by killing Americans, and then if the Americans back out they figure they will be seen as having won a great victory and might have a shot at taking over areas in the Islamic world. At the same time killing Americans probably means they are killing "infidels" so as far as they are concerned it just all good... (at least until they get a couple of 500lb bombs dropped on their head.) I guess they see killing Americans as a tactical way they hope to achieve their mid range goals (Islamic governments run by their interpretation of Islam, hopefully by them), and also a small contributer to their very long range goal (the whole world under such a government) As for Zawahiri's death, yes too much can be made of it, but I still look at it as good news.
