I'm sorry but that is mythology. Darwin didn't publish anything about evolution until after Wallace wrote to him. He did publish other things. If he was working on evolutionary theory in some manner, it's amazing that he didn't publish anything about it for decades.

He did no experiments, nor did he propose any.

He also showed how to use the fossil record, and it's gaps, to make predictions about the type of fossils that would fill the gaps.

I don't think so. He did say the fossil record has massive gaps. I think the only thing he predicted is that perhaps some of these would be filled in someday.

Wallace wrote to Darwin in 1858 because Darwin was already a scientific authority on the subject.
