Since its announcement, I've not been able to make sense of how Chartered fits into AMD's plans. Regardless of what it is making, the initial production rate appears to be 1k wafers/month. This is 1/20th of Fab 36 full capability, and presumably by now multiples this much of fab 36 should be ramped already. So why employ chartered ? What can Chartered do that Fab 36 can't, whether in terms of process or capacity ?

The first completed parts from fab 7 will be packaged in early August. Just in time for 50% price reduction.
