Tunghai University Keeps Its Curriculum Continuous with FalconStor Technology

Leading Educational Institution in Taiwan Implements FalconStor's VirtualTape Library and IPStor Software to Ensure Ongoing Data Availability
TAICHUNG, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2006--FalconStor Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: FALC), the leading developer of proven data protection solutions, today announced that Tunghai University, one of Taiwan's educational pioneers, has implemented FalconStor's VirtualTape Library (VTL) and IPStor® software solutions for data protection, improved uptime, and to significantly reduce the backup window of its application and web servers.
Traditional tape backup of the University's three terabytes worth of data proved to be a challenging and lengthy process for system administrators. Since a full backup took three days to complete, Tunghai University's application and web servers were vulnerable to any instance of data disruption, with a potential for huge data gaps during a recovery process, especially with the length of time between each full backup copy.
"When our critical data was hacked into during one of our weekly backups, we knew that we needed to find a better way of doing things. We looked into FalconStor's VTL and IPStor solutions and haven't looked back since," said Dr. Ching-Tsorng Tsai, director, Tunghai University Computer Center. "The solution easily integrated with our systems, and has drastically reduced the amount of time and effort it takes to perform backups."
Tunghai University decided to implement IPStor software to integrate and manage its dispersed storage environment. The University then looked at FalconStor's VTL, and decided to leverage and deploy both solutions together to optimize and accelerate backup, and to reduce the backup window from three days to less than half a day.
The University now retains three weeks' worth of backups in its VTL appliance, automatically exporting data to its physical tape library for archiving as scheduled, without affecting the production environment. For additional data protection, VTL leverages the high-speed IPStor HyperTrac(TM) Backup Accelerator Option, which resides on the backup server, to maximize backup speed. During a scheduled backup, the HyperTrac Backup Accelerator is triggered, causing IPStor to generate a point-in-time snapshot TimeMark® of the primary data, with the backup server backing up the snapshot to VTL at rapid Fibre Channel speeds.
