Saflink Corp. said it's been selected as a subcontractor on a U.S. Department of Defense cryptographic library contract that could be worth as much as $7.7 million.

Kirkland-based Saflink (NASDAQ: SFLK - News) has provided Fortezza card readers to the government's Defense Message System for the past 11 years.

"Fortezza technology offers military personnel both domestically and in the field the same level of protection when sending and receiving critical e-mail communications. Successful application of Fortezza technology in the DMS program is one of Saflink's most significant and longstanding contributions to homeland security," said Joe Havrilla, Saflink vice president of embedded systems, in a statement.

Last month, Saflink reported a first-quarter loss of $36.8 million, or 42 cents per share, after a good will impairment charge of $29.7 million was figured into its results.
