There is an interesting PBS special out there that i saw yesterday. The claim is made that soviet entry into the war had as much to do with surrender as the atomic bomb did. And for us the casualites of invasion would have been enormous and the alternative to using the bomb would have left the japanese regime and its militaristic culture in place. To show you just how naive our folks were, General Marshall proposed waiting a few months until 7 more bombs were developme to invade so that we could use nukes to attack the japanese on the beaches. There was no real understanding of the dangers of radiation at all.
