This article concerns the loss of a judicial seat by a
very well respected jurist--Dzintra Janavs.

I've appeared before Judge Janavs and fully agree with the positive statements about her set forth in the article.

Her opponent was not even a practicing lawyer. She and her husband, who is a local councilman, own some bakery/bagel shops.

While Judge Janavs was rated "exceptionally well qualified", her opponent was rated "not qualified", which itself is quite a contrast.

There was some speculation that Judge Janavs lost because of her foreign sounding name. Others muse that she was simply outspent.

To me, this outcome illustrates how the public can be played. It happens with polls, which are often designed to yield a desired outcome. It happens with daily talking points and repeated sound bites aimed at instilling certain beliefs in the electorate.

Recently, I was talking to a retired engineer, who is an avid web surfer. He proclaimed that he's lost 95% of the rights he had in 1945, but could not name them. (He's also the one who told an elderly friend of mine that she probably contracted anthrax through the mail when she complained of some respiratory distress during one of the anthrax scares.)

Perhaps others won't agree with my reaction to the judge's defeat as it relates to the larger issue of manipulation of
public opinion, but I see it as part of the same continuum.
