Well, I was hardly advocating assignments for life.
I don't have a philosophical problem with judicial elections
either.

On the one hand, life-time appointments are intended to
preserve the independence of the judiciary. On the other,
they make it very difficult to get rid of, let's say, poorly performing judges.

Unlike state court judges, USDC judges receive lifetime appointments. Some take the "lifetime" part seriously and stay well into their 80's, which I consider excessive. At some point, it's time for new blood.

The Janavs case interested me because her opponent really wasn't qualified. Even if some folks had a legitimate beef with Janavs, I'm not convinced that the answer is to replace
her with someone who is not likely to be up to the job.

In a way, I feel sorry for Olson. File that under the caption
"Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it."
