The difference between 100 years and 1000 years may be fairly insignificant on a cosmological scale, but it is very significant in terms of planning a response to a possible future problem.

That is the whole point. Just like earthquakes in California. It could happen tomorrow or it could be 1000 years from now, but they have to be prepared now.
