An earthquake or an asteroid hit, or a super volcano eruption, isn't something we can yet reliably predict, and is something that happens suddenly and relatively quickly. Global warming is a slow processes at least in ordinary human scale of time or compared to these things. If we think a major change will happen in a thousand years we don't need to make a major effort now, if we think its going to happen in a hundred years than preliminary steps would make sense. If we think its going to reach a massive tipping point in 10 years (I don't BTW) than its probably to late to avoid it, and if it isn't it will be very painful to make the steps to avoid or deal with it.

10 years, 100 years, or a 1000 years makes a huge difference in how we respond. Its not just all "we need to be prepared now".
