New H-P Servers Aim
To Automate Tasks

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced a line of computer servers that the company claims will reduce by half the cost of maintaining corporate data centers.

Executives of the computer and printer maker said the BladeSystem c-Class is easier to set up and maintain than its previous "blade" server models or those offered by rivals.

Blades are slimmed-down, self-contained servers administrators can plug into a network as needed. The machines, which are used to serve up Web pages and handle other computing chores, are a $10 billion-a-year market and make up the fastest-growing segment of the server business, said Ann Livermore, executive vice president for H-P's server group.

The line, which will be available in July, is part of an initiative H-P has dubbed "adaptive infrastructure," which aims to automate time-consuming tasks required to set up and maintain large fleets of servers. It competes with similar moves from International Business Machines Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc. and others.
