Party spirit that outweighs ones interest in the truth, lies, and double standards are all deplorable to me.

I've got a question for you though. What about a lie that saves lives? For example I'm sure the recent statement by Rumsfeld that the US has no intention of having long term bases in Iraq is that kind of lie. He's probably thinking that if people believe it they will be less likely to resist and in that way lives will be saved. So ideologically what do you think of lies to saves lives?
