It seems to me that our involvement consisted of a long, drawn out process. The county of Vietnam and its people were victims of a Colonialistic and then a broader anti-Communistic effort. The only reason I knew that our involvement started with Truman was because of an argument I had with my sister years ago. She insisted that it was Republicans that have started most wars. I did some research and came to a different conclusion. You're welcome!
