Detroit has actively chosen to remain behind the curve for as long as I have been driving, circa 1966. They ran away from the Corvair when Nader went after them and left a truly great car behind. Keep in mind that everyone had terrific small block V8 motors which ran forever--Chev 283, Ford 289, as well as truly remarkable things like the Mopar 225 Slant 6. They all had great small car operations in Europe like GM OPAL which could have been moved to this country any time. I am on my second Chrysler minivan because it is a really good all-around work/play vehicle here in the NYC renovation biz. There is no excuse for it only getting 20-23mpg though.
