this seems like AS on the eve of the election day 2004: By JOHN HOLUSHA Published: June 16, 2006 A Staten Island man was charged today with promoting a suicide attempt and endangering the welfare of children in connection with the plunge of his wife and two daughters in a van off a cliff in Bear Mountain State Park on Wednesday evening.
Victor K. Han was charged on five counts before a town justice in Story Point, N.Y., as a result of the death of his wife, Hejin Han, 35, who was at the wheel of the vehicle as it went down a 300-foot cliff.
Their two daughters, ages 3 and 5, who were protected by seat belts in the rear seat of the vehicle, survived the crash with minor injuries.
Mr. Han, who pleaded not guilty, is currently in the Rockland County jail awaiting a bail hearing.
The police said what appeared to be an accident emerged as an assisted suicide after talking to Mr. Han. They said he knew his wife had suicidal intentions when he stepped out of the car on Perkins Memorial Drive in the park, leaving the motor running.
His wife then put the car in gear, locked the doors and drove off the cliff, the police said.
He was indicted on charges of promoting a suicide attempt, two counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The police said he "afforded her an opportunity to carry out her intentions."
