That's exactly right. It's to replace our former "client state", Saudi Arabia. After Gulf War I, we put in large bases and didn't leave. Osama's manifesto demanded we leave Saudi Arabia. After 9/11, we did, at the urging of the Saudis. news.bbc.co.uk Iraq was the weakest and easiest state to invade.
