<Just stop babbling and we can talk...>

Well, the balls in your court... you have made the statements (presumably of what you believe to be fact):

"But the mind is of course strictly a part of the brain."

"If you don't have a brain you don't have a mind."

And going back to the beginning in relation to "soul" or "spirit" or something other than "material":

"Demons, spirits, soul--all these are imaginary concepts arising in superstitious ages".

And when I question: "So by including "soul" in (2) shouldn't you be saying that the mind arises from the brain... not just dependent?"

You don't seem to know what I'm asking... or what I mean. Later I explain "emergent" as the concept that consciousness arises from the brain that many scientists believe. I don't know if you know this or not as you seem to get defensive. The wording is important because if as you say:

"Components of mind are dependent upon brain functions."

This doesn't preclude mind as not being 'emergent' from the brain since only (some?) "componants" are (only) "dependent" (not "arise from", or 'emergent' from) brain "functions". So for example take the TV tuner... you need it to tune into the show... but the show doesn't "arise from" or isn't "emergent from" the TV tuner. You're description leaves room for the brain as a "tuner" or "focuser" or "translater" of the mind. So when one loses it's brain, of course the screen is blank, but that doesn't mean there is no show being broadcast.

Is that what you MEAN to impart to me, or do you think the mind is "emergent" from the physical brain (cells) itself???
