There are two main branches of Islam, Sunni and Shia. Of Iraqis about 60% are Arab Shia, about 20% Arab Sunnia, and about 20% Kurds, who are not Arabs but who are Sunni.

There are different branches of thought among the Sunni. The most radical and extreme branch follows the puritanical Wahhabi strain which is the official religion of Saudi Arabia. This strain is also called takfiri from its habit of declaring other Muslims to be bad Muslims, as good as infidels.

Al Qaeda is Islamist/Wahhabi/takfiri in its outlook, and so are other the other radical Sunni Islamist groups to various extents, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Hamas.

Al Qaeda may despise Shia as infidels, but they also despise the Kurds and the majority of Iraqi Sunni who don't want to live in an Islamist state under Al Qaeda overlords. They have shown no hesitancy whatsoever in murdering Iraqi Sunni Arabs who have shown any resistance to their program, including assassinating a bunch of tribal Sunni sheikhs.
