Iran was reacting to the US lightening victory in iraq and perhaps the fear that they might be next. Perhaps it was hubris that kept the US from the table back then--why talk to the dirty mullahs when we can drive them from power?? Fast forward to now as the past is now history. Right now i think a united iraq under this current govt is in the interests of both iran and the US. The iranians have gotten all they can from the insurgency and the destruction of bush. Sectarian civil war does neither party any good so it is time to settle up at least on iraq. For the US, peace in iraq is impossible without iranian support. Both sides have an interest in defeating both radical sunni islam and anarchy in the region. Both need to get over the past.
