When people use personal names in a "point" about the feelings/actions of an alleged group, then you now very well it is personal and opportunistic. What you don't know is whether it is true or merely gratuitous malice. Being ignorant of that point does not absolve you from making an appropriate response. What if his accusation was of being a murderer? If he said:

I am offended by people like members ----- and Solon that committed murders when they were soldiers.

would you respond:

"I to am fed up with the likes of them and IMO they sure don't represent the majority of soldiers."

Now, I am trying to get you to understand something here, Lorne: It is not the specific vilification that informs this argument. It is the fact of same. Especially, was it a slur against me considering that I have always spoken out against Canadians whom demonstrated a blatant prejudice against Americans. My response to you was a mild rebuke for a thoughtless and hurtful act. You could have deflected the escalation that ensued by a simple admission and apology.

I responded to your insult by reminding you that I did not know you and that your response to his slur was a dumbass response.

I have seen people start this sort of behind-the-back slander on SI and then carry on for days or weeks with ugly slurs and misrepresentations. Even when I did not know the person in question I have felt compelled to butt in and remind people that it is hardly fair to bad mouth people behind their back when they have no opportunity to challenge your motive or your truth.

Your response to the mild remonstrance of "you dumbass" has been to work your way through several dozen boxes of kleenex! Get over it, Lorne! When you are wrong...admit it quickly and move on. Just some advice from Granny! <gg>
