It seems to me that the most rancor directed at illegals isn't that they work cheap -- after all, those same people probably would take those same jobs whether they are legal or illegal, since they don't have much education or training.

From what I can tell, the real rancor is the perception that they are using government services without paying tax. Which apparently is a real issue in California, and maybe other states, but not everywhere.

I don't think it's an issue in Virginia.

I have a client whose mother is illegal. My client's grandfather (father in law of the illegal woman) is legal, and brought all his family over one at a time, but by the time he brought her father over, he had married and had children.

So he came over and left his wife in the old country to take care of the kids and brought them over one at a time. Last was the mom but they screwed up somehow and she was supposed to go back but stayed.

Now here's the squirrelly part -- my client says her mom can't get emergency room treatment here, because she's illegal. I thought that was the one government subsidized benefit they could get. Maybe it's because the dad makes enough money to own a very nice house so they aren't Medicaid eligible.
