Made the assessment in 2002, thinking the housing market would top out 2 years after the stock market. I was wrong from the sense that I have no home equity while others do, but in terms of my daily living costs, I have been better off renting (still, the savings is a far cry from the foregone equity).

But the trick in life is to not compound one's losses and I've learned a lot about the housing market since then - namely, don't fight the tape.
