As I understand it, the police in New Orleans weren't going house to house confiscating guns from residents, they were confiscating guns people were carrying openly on the streets, because they couldn't tell who was a looter and who wasn't, and removing them from abandoned houses to keep them from falling into the hands of looters. Interestingly, they weren't confiscating guns from private security guards.

Having grown up in Louisiana, my guess is that middle-class-and-up people, especially white people, especially middle-aged-and-up people, didn't lose their guns.

Unlike other jurisdictions, NOPD have always profiled.
