Another explanation that fails the laugh test is "They hate us because they hate freedom." That's a good one. You'd think they'd have attacked The Netherlands or Sweden by now if that was the case.

Or a perfectly inoffensive place like Denmark. You're quite right, ridiculous idea.

It's not a full explanation, but radical Islamists do hate the Western notion of freedom. They say and show it all the time. Why does the US support girl's schools in Afghanistan? Why does the Taliban keep trying to burn them down?

They've said why they did it. They've repeated their reasons ad nauseum. We support Israel at the expense of Palestinians, we keep troups in Saudi Arabia, and now, we've added to those reasons by invading two Islamic nations

Actually the Palestinians were a Johnny-come-lately to OBL's list of grievances. Stationing infidel troops on the land of the holy cities (ie supporting the House of Saud) was grievance #1. He also got in some whacks at "80 years of Muslim humiliation" (ie the entire history of the Modern Middleast) before vowing that the "tragedy of Al-Andalus" will not be repeated in Palestine. This guy is still burned about Ferdinand and Isabella taking Spain in 1492!

This guy isn't for a change in US policy. He's for resurrecting the Caliphate, and btw conquering Europe and America. He says that too, very clearly.

I believe the underlying reasons, though, are explained in two words: wounded pride. Bin Laden was an unimportant and uninfluential member of a very important and influential family. He's trying to prove to his dozens of brothers, uncles, and whatnot, that he's a big powerful man like they are

Probably. Though I think this explanation works for the global jihadi movement too. Most of Arab culture seems to be running on wounded pride these days. It's why they spend so much effort shifting the blame to others, and so little trying to tackle their own problems.
