there's plenty of oil.

If only that were so. There is no spare capacity in the world today. The vast majority of remaining conventional petroleum resources are located in the ME, Russia, Venezuela, Nigeria, etc. Not exactly politically stable regions. China and India's appetite is growing by leaps and bounds. New discoveries of large fields are a thing of the past.

Unconventional sources (oil sands and shale) are found in abundance in North America but are difficult and expensive to exploit. Head in the sand econuts and NIMBY's make further exploration and extraction even more difficult. Expecting alternative energy to replace petroleum is a pipe dream, right up there with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

Another unfortunate hurricane in the gulf production and refining areas this summer will result in far higher crude and refined prices than we're seeing today. Severe production disruption in any of the above mentioned unstable regions will create the same result. Call it a scare tactic if you will. Reality can be a cold shower...
