>>One is that in time the current tidal wave of anti-Americanism will ebb, just as in the past. Smarter American diplomacy can help, of course, as can success in places such as Iraq. But the other lesson is not to succumb to the illusion that America was beloved until the spring of 2003 and will be beloved again when George W. Bush leaves office.<<

Thanks for posting that. Good article. It's nice to read something on this subject that isn't simplistic, and isn't devoid of any familiarity with the history of the twentieth century.

I picked out the paragraph above in order to point out that I think it misses the point. The point is not that America was the world's darling throughout history up until 2003. It's more that after 9/11, the United States suddenly had more friends around the world than we had had in a very long time. In Paris, Le Monde ran the headline, "We are all Americans", which would have been unthinkable a month earlier.

I think it's undeniable that Bush's bullying of all of our allies in trying to get a coalition to join us in Iraq, or at least to endorse the war, went a very long way to reminding the rest of the world that they didn't necessarily like us all that well.

So of course Bush is not to blame for all anti-Americanism in the world. But I don't think there are many people on the left who think he is. They are just pissed off about an opportunity for world cooperation on an unprecedented level having been squandered by Bush.
